Immunology is a topic of general concern worldwide. No human being can survive without a functioning immune system with its sophisticated mechanisms.

AIDS, influenza, tuberculosis, allergy, rheumatism, cancer – these are all diseases caused by an insufficient or aberrant immune system, which normally protects the body from infection and diseases.

Vaccination, one of the greatest achievements in medical science, is a wonderful example of successful triggering of the immune response. Several infectious diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and polio are no longer a threat in Europe because of the successful development and application of vaccines.

The challenges that an immune system faces in different parts of the world are unique according to prevailing conditions. Therefore, the better we understand how the immune system operates the better we can help all people stay healthy and protect themselves against pandemics such as HIV or avian flu, to name just two.

The human body is vulnerable. Immunology helps to protect it.
